Before & After: Bon Secours Community Health Clinic

Bon Secours Community Health Clinic is the first fixed site of “Care-A-Van,” a mobile health clinic that’s been serving Richmond’s uninsured and underserved community for more than 25 years. Planting roots in Manchester provides convenient and affordable healthcare that will be continually available to those who need it most. This once derelict warehouse in South Richmond is now a beautiful destination for community health and healing.

Overcoming Challenges

ENV was challenged with a split-level second floor with no stairs or elevator access that did not meet today’s code requirements and no building conditioning when the design team was brought in. The roof was outfitted with generator power, skylights, new rooftop units, and solar panels to bring full conditioning and electrical upgrades to the building.

The building is a linear divided space only having windows on the front side. This limited access to natural light and outdoor views. The breakroom, for example, was deep into the floor plate and to introduce natural lighting into the center of the building, our team utilized skylights that offered indirect daylight to illuminate the space without glare.

Previously used as a factory floor, full ADA access was added through a lift while respecting the original brick structure and façade, per the DHR requirements. Our client is pleased to offer their patients a fully outfitted healthcare experience in a character-filled historic structure.

The ENV team worked to conceptualize the space through interior renderings. This allowed the client to see proposed solutions to integrating the existing structural elements. In adding a steel header to the historic brick opening, it opened up the staff areas to a collaborative social and hoteling zone.

A New Beginning

The renovated space now offers exam rooms, a lab, behavioral health spaces, and administrative offices, providing a comprehensive healthcare experience. By preserving the building’s historic character while incorporating modern amenities, ENV created a space that is both beautiful and functional.

A Bright Future

Bon Secours is thrilled to offer their patients a state-of-the-art clinic that combines the best of both worlds: historic character and modern healthcare. This project is a testament to the power of design to improve lives and strengthen communities.

We are grateful for the opportunity to bring all of the services we currently offer on the Care-A-Van to our patients and community in one fixed location. This clinic will be outfitted with new equipment and the latest medical technology, which will enhance our ability to provide the quality, compassionate care we are known for to this community now and for many years to come.
