Chasen
Completed in early 2026, Chasen represents a landmark transformation within Richmond’s fastest-growing neighborhood, Scott’s Addition. Repurposing a former three-acre industrial painting facility, the project replaces heavy industrial use with sophisticated, high-density community connectivity. ENV led the interior architecture for all amenity spaces across the property, collaborating closely with the developer from the initial visioning phase through final completion.
The Vision In a neighborhood rapidly expanding with new residential construction, the primary objective was to deliver a highly differentiated product. The core design concept elevates standard multifamily housing into a classy, sophisticated environment tailored to a mature demographic seeking a refined urban lifestyle.
The Challenge A major design challenge was establishing a cohesive aesthetic across three distinct six- and seven-story buildings while giving each structure its own unique identity. Furthermore, the sprawling layout required seamless transitions across various grade changes, demanding the thoughtful integration of accessible ramps, kitchens, and shared zones that feel both effortless and luxurious.
Design Solutions & Signature Elements To achieve this balance, ENV applied timeless design principles fused with a modern edge that honors the neighborhood’s gritty heritage. We created visual continuity by weaving signature architectural elements throughout the property, delivering a premium aesthetic that maximized the project budget:
-
Architectural Continuity: Elegant gallery wall arches and striking vertical slat walls introduced in Building One are thoughtfully repeated in all three mailrooms and the Building Two club room.
-
The Whiskey Lounge: A noteworthy technical feature, this sophisticated lounge boasts full-height millwork and a dramatic floating fireplace. Strategically positioned, it acts as a glowing beacon visible from two interior levels and the exterior streetscape.
-
Sustainable Durability: Sustainable best practices guided all material selections, prioritizing both environmental responsibility and long-term durability in high-traffic areas.
The Impact The project’s success is reflected in exceptional lease-up rates, widespread media coverage (including being named a 2026 Top Project by Virginia Business), and overwhelmingly positive market feedback. Ultimately, Chasen successfully navigates the complexities of a large-scale site transition, delivering a timeless living experience that definitively stands out in Richmond’s most dynamic neighborhood.
