BHE GT&S – A Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company

BHE GT&S, a subsidiary of Fortune 500 Berkshire Hathaway Energy, partnered with ENV for the design of their new corporate headquarters in Glen Allen, Virginia, kicking off the 120,000 SF full-service renovation. BHE GT&S considered several properties before purchasing a pair of semi-connected vacant office buildings in Henrico County’s new Innsbrook Tech Zone, which offers incentives to specific types of businesses.

The major renovations occurred across four floors of existing office space. The new layout provides open workspace areas for workstations, as well as private offices, huddle rooms, and conference rooms throughout each floor. Each floor also has a large breakroom with tables and booth seating, as well as a smaller breakroom for easy access anywhere on the floor.

While acoustic privacy is required for the private offices and conference rooms, each closed space has a full glass wall system that allows for visual openness and natural light penetration across the floorplate. A band of frosted film provides a moderate level of visual privacy.

In the adjacent connected building, a light renovation to the existing training rooms brought new life to those spaces. Replacing millwork, light fixtures, carpet, and paint, were simple fixes that completely transformed the area and made it more inviting to the tenants and guests.

The main entrance to the buildings was demolished and replaced. The new canopy system was designed to match the original aesthetic of the buildings but with a fresh and modern look. Reusing the existing structural columns and granite wrap, a new roof system was constructed on top using a membrane roof with a metal-cladded fascia.

Clean white walls are also used to brighten up the space and reflect natural light. Dark accents and colorful wall coverings are used to highlight key areas and bring additional warmth throughout the space.
